Business and Investment in Townsville

This is the story of the Rise of the North PDF Document (2.5mB)*. Townsville is quickly ascending in the national interest as northern economies and populations boom. Nowhere is this more evident than in Townsville, North Queensland - Australia’s largest tropical city.

For many, Queensland means Brisbane and the South East, a region recognised as having one of the fastest growing populations in the developed world. Increasingly, the region is facing constraints to its population growth, evident in a shortage of resources and increasing congestion.

Townsville is already the largest independent regional centre in Northern Australia, and is positioned to be the major beneficiary of the continued "rise of the north". In 2005-06, the North Queensland regional economy grew by over 12% and the only non-capital cities in Australia to receive more new people than Townsville were Gold Coast-Tweed and the Sunshine Coast.

The transformation is already underway. North Queensland’s local economy, one that is widely recognised as the broadest based in regional Australia, is firing strongly on all cylinders. Resident surveys reveal a dramatic increase in the liveability of the region. People are flocking to North Queensland for the opportunities and staying for the lifestyle.

Townsville feels a bit like Brisbane did in the late 1980s. The feeling on the ground is that the place has permanently stepped up a couple of gears, but the rest of the country hasn’t quite worked it out yet.

Townsville is the growth centre of the North Queensland region and has large reserves of land ready for development. It is some of the most strategic land in the region.

We invite you to look through this website. It outlines opportunities presented by Townsville for you to become a part of.

*Please note the Rise of the North was created by the Thuringowa City Council prior to local government amalgamation with Townsville City in March 2008. It is intended that the content of the portfolio document be further updated with more information in the near future.
